Of course, this little guy would also have been appropriate....
|Hedgehogs: a 15 million year old species|
That's Vlad the Impaler. He's spotted. And he has vampire teeth. Which is actually normal. But I didn't know that when I named him after the real-life Dracula. It was a happy accident. Actually, the first time I saw them it was a slightly unhappy accident. First time Vlad bit me- baby teeth. Second time - "Ohai. I have fully grown vampire teeth so long they poke out of my closed mouth now. How do those feel?" Jerk. He could have warned me. Just a little "Heads up- my teeth are about to get wicked" would have been nice.
Turns out hedgehogs in general may have been around 70 million years ago. And African Pygmy hedgehogs, like Vlad, are about 15 million years old. Older than Wooly Mammoths and Saber Tooth Tigers. Maybe there was some inter-species hanky panky with the tigers that lead to the unexpected saber-teeth of our domesticated hogs?
